George Jones are winners of this extremely important award and below is what Greater Manchester Employer Coalition had to say about us:-George Jones & Son (contractors) Ltd are a long established painting & decorating company specialising in the redecoration of social housing for Responsible Social Landlords (RSL's). When appointed by GM Procure onto their framework for providing painting services to their RSL clients, George Jones were asked if they would help a micro business that had approached them for assistance.
The idea behind the micro business was to employ local people from black and minority ethnic background as painters but it quickly became clear that, although the owner was keen and committed, he knew nothing about commercial painting and stood little chance of getting his business up and running without considerable help. George Jones committed immediately to giving the project its best possible chance.
This commitment included:
· Dedicating considerable time to the recruitment of local people with relevant experience who had struggled to find long-term employment
· Underwriting the wages of every new starter for the first few weeks, irrespective of output
· Assigning one of their most experienced painting foremen to manage the site and one of their most experienced fence painters to work with the trainees
· Lending them a transit van free of charge until they could afford to buy their own
· Helping to monitor the performance of each trainee, and offering suggestions on how the team could work more effectively, and move towards becoming a profitable organisation
As a result of George Jones efforts, 7 unemployed Manchester residents from black and minority ethnic background now have a full time job an a good salary, and the micro business is a credible organisation taking on new contacts.
